Phototransduction: Shedding Light on Translocation
نویسنده
چکیده
Light induces the migration of arrestin to the photosensitive membrane in both vertebrate and invertebrate photoreceptors. New work has identified a phosphoinositide lipid binding domain in Drosophila arrestin and implicates PIP(3) in control of arrestin translocation.

Phosphodiesterase Inhibitors Sildenafil and Vardenafil Reduce Zebrafish Rod Photoreceptor Outer Segment Shedding
Purpose The vertebrate rod photoreceptor undergoes daily growth and shedding to renew the rod outer segment (ROS), a modified cilium that contains the phototransduction machinery. It has been demonstrated that ROS shedding is regulated by the light-dark cycle; however, we do not yet have a satisfactory understanding of the molecular mechanisms that underlie this regulation. Given that phototran...
متن کاملArrestin Translocation Is Stoichiometric to Rhodopsin Isomerization and Accelerated by Phototransduction in Drosophila Photoreceptors
Upon illumination, visual arrestin translocates from photoreceptor cell bodies to rhodopsin and membrane-rich photosensory compartments, vertebrate outer segments or invertebrate rhabdomeres, where it quenches activated rhodopsin. Both the mechanism and function of arrestin translocation are unresolved and controversial. In dark-adapted photoreceptors of the fruitfly Drosophila, confocal immuno...
متن کاملLight-dependent redistribution of visual arrestins and transducin subunits in mice with defective phototransduction.
PURPOSE The light-dependent redistribution of phototransduction components in photoreceptor cells plays a role in light adaptation. Upon illumination, rod and cone arrestins (Arr and cArr) translocate from the inner to the outer segments while transducin subunits (Talpha, Tbetagamma) translocate in the opposite direction. The underlying translocation mechanisms are unclear. This study examines ...
متن کاملGC1 deletion prevents light-dependent arrestin translocation in mouse cone photoreceptor cells.
PURPOSE Light-driven translocation of phototransduction regulatory proteins between the inner and outer segments of photoreceptor cells plays a role in the adaptation of these cells to light. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of the absence of guanylate cyclase 1 (GC1) on light-driven protein translocation in rod and cone cells. Both cell types express GC1, but differ in sens...
متن کاملSubcellular translocation of the eGFP-tagged TRPL channel in Drosophila photoreceptors requires activation of the phototransduction cascade.
Signal-mediated translocation of transient receptor potential (TRP) channels is a novel mechanism to fine tune a variety of signaling pathways including neuronal path finding and Drosophila photoreception. In Drosophila phototransduction the cation channels TRP and TRP-like (TRPL) are the targets of a prototypical G protein-coupled signaling pathway. We have recently found that the TRPL channel...
